Places to Know

In Nasr City

Abbas al-Aqqad: The biggest and busiest street in Nasr City. This street is central to many of the institutes in Nasr City, and home to several malls and restaurants.

Al-‘Ashir (The Tenth): This is a district at the edge of Nasr City, close to the edge of the world J. This is where many of the Azhari foreign students live. Housing is cheap here, and the area is very convenient by microbus. Although it is the farthest away, you can get here from anywhere. It is also very close to the Ring Road.

Outside of Nasr City

Maidan Ramses: A maidan (public square) close to downtown, this is where all the microbuses congregate and depart from. The train station is here, as well as both an underground (Mubarak station) and tram metro station. You can basically find a means of getting to anywhere in Egypt from Ramses.

Maidan Tahrir: Central to the embassies, big banks, American University of Cairo and the Nile. There is an underground Metro stop there (Nasser station).

Sharia Jama’a al-Dawal al-Arabiya: The main street in Mohandiseen, an upscale district of Cairo north east of downtown and across the Nile.

Maidan Sphinx: A major intersection in Mohandiseen.

Maidan Giza: Close to Cairo University and the Zoo. It is accessible by the underground Metro.

Sayida Zainab: This area is close to masjid al-Azhar and Sultan Hassan in Islamic Cairo.

Long Distance Bus Stations

Turgoman: This is near Ramses station downtown. Almost all buses come here, but this is the only station that will serve Upper Egypt and the oases.

Maza: In Heliopolis. Buses for Alexandria, the Suez Canal, and Sinai come here.

Abbassia: In Abbassia, just northwest of Nasr City. Buses for Alexandria, the Suez Canal, and Sinai come here.

In general, people are very friendly and will help you to get to where you want to go. However, when asking, ask a couple different people to make sure they concur. Sometimes, people may prefer making something up to saying ‘I don’t know.’
